Reading School 11+ Exam: What Parents Need to Know
Reading School is a highly selective boys' grammar school in the South East, and the entrance exam is significantly harder than a standard 11+ paper. The school receives far more applications than places available, which means the exam is designed to identify only the very top candidates. You should expect your child to need preparation well above typical Year 6 level — many tutors recommend working towards early Key Stage 3 standard for the most competitive applicants.
The exam has several standout challenges. Vocabulary is particularly demanding, with sophisticated academic words and less common synonyms appearing regularly — well beyond what children usually encounter at primary school. Reading comprehension also goes deeper than straightforward retrieval; your child will need to interpret tone, authorial intent and implied meaning. Maths requires multi-step problem-solving and logical reasoning rather than just practising standard techniques. Combined with the fast pace of the CEM format, many children report feeling rushed, especially in the verbal sections.
One important thing to know is that CEM deliberately varies question types from year to year to avoid children simply drilling past paper formats. This means flexible thinking and genuine understanding matter more than memorising specific question patterns. Timed practice is essential — your child needs to get comfortable working quickly and accurately under pressure. Exposure to challenging books and texts, alongside structured tutoring that builds reasoning skills rather than just teaching tricks, will serve them best.
