Lily claims that 3/5 of 85 equals 51. Is Lily correct?
Divide 85 by 5 to find one fifth: 17. Three fifths is 17 × 3 = 51. Lily is right.
50 is a rounder number and 85 is close to 100 — estimating lands you near 50. The estimate is reasonable; it just isn’t the answer.

What is the 11+ exam?
The 11+ is an entrance exam sat in Year 6, used by grammar schools and some independent schools in England to decide admission. It is not part of the national curriculum and children do not sit it at school by default — families opt in.
Most areas test some combination of four subjects: maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Which of those appear, and in what format, depends on the exam board your target schools use — most commonly GL Assessment, with CEM in some areas and a number of schools setting their own papers.
Because the format varies by area, the single most useful thing a parent can do early is confirm which board their target schools use. Practising the wrong format is the most common avoidable mistake.
