Our Accessibility Principles

Inclusive by Design

Built from the ground up to support all learners

WCAG 2.1 AA Target

Working toward full Level AA compliance

Continuous Improvement

Actively iterating based on user feedback

1. Our Commitment

TrueVIQ is committed to making 11+ exam preparation accessible to all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Approximately 15% of children in the UK have special educational needs. We believe every one of them deserves equal access to quality exam preparation, and we design our platform with that principle at its core.

Our goal is to meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard across the entire platform.

2. Accessibility Features We Provide

  • Keyboard Navigation: Full keyboard access across all practice modes. Press 1–5 to select answers, Enter to submit, and Escape to pause.
  • Text-to-Speech: Questions can be read aloud using native browser speech synthesis (en-GB). This is entirely free, runs locally on the device, and no data is sent to third parties.
  • Dyslexia-Friendly Font: OpenDyslexic can be enabled in Settings, replacing the default font across the entire platform.
  • Adjustable Text Size: Three options available — Normal, Large (125%), and Extra Large (150%).
  • High Contrast Mode: Achieves WCAG AAA 7:1 contrast ratios for maximum readability.
  • Reduced Motion Mode: Respects the operating system’sprefers-reduced-motion setting automatically, with an additional manual toggle in Settings.
  • Reading Guide Overlay: A line tracker overlay to help maintain focus while reading questions and passages.
  • Extra Time Accommodations: 25% or 50% additional time, mirroring JCQ access arrangements used in the real 11+ exam.
  • ARIA Attributes and Semantic HTML: Used throughout the platform to support screen readers and assistive technologies.
  • Tablet-Optimised Interfaces: iPad is the primary target device, with touch-friendly controls and responsive layouts.

3. Exam Accommodations

We mirror the real JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) access arrangements used in the 11+ exam, so children can practise under the same conditions they will experience on exam day.

Extra time applies to:

  • Mock tests
  • PRISM time trials
  • Timed practice sessions

Note: Arena Live (competitive mode) uses standard timing for all participants to ensure fair competition.

4. Known Limitations

We believe in being transparent about the areas where our accessibility support has limitations:

  • Visual Reasoning (VR) and Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR): These question types contain visual patterns that cannot be fully described via text-to-speech. TTS reads the instruction text but cannot describe the visual figures. This is an inherent limitation of the 11+ exam format.
  • Text-to-Speech Voice Quality: Voice quality varies by browser and device. Safari on iPad provides the best experience. Chrome and Firefox may offer different voices depending on your operating system.
  • Third-Party Components: We are working toward WCAG 2.1 AA compliance across the platform. Some third-party components may not yet meet all criteria, and we are actively working with component maintainers to address gaps.

5. How to Enable Accommodations

Parents can enable accessibility features in two ways:

  • During child profile setup: Accessibility options are presented as part of the initial profile creation flow.
  • Anytime in Settings > Accessibility: All features can be toggled on or off at any point.

All features are optional and can be changed at any time. No feature is locked or requires a specific subscription tier.

6. Feedback and Contact

We actively welcome feedback on accessibility. If you encounter a barrier, have suggestions for improvement, or need assistance using the platform:

We aim to respond to all accessibility enquiries within 5 working days.

7. Standards and Compliance

  • Target Standard: WCAG 2.1 Level AA
  • Framework: ICO Age Appropriate Design Code (Children’s Code)
  • Data Protection: UK GDPR
  • SEND Data: Collected with explicit parental consent only
