Wilson's School 11+ Exam: What Parents Need to Know

1

Wilson's School is a boys-only grammar school in Wallington, Sutton, and is part of the Sutton Consortium. All Sutton Consortium schools use the same entrance exam — the GL Assessment-based Sutton SET — which tests Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics, and English. The exam takes place in September of Year 6, with registration opening in the summer term and closing in late June or early July.

2

This is a significantly harder exam than a standard GL paper. Wilson's is one of the most selective schools in the consortium, and the combination of challenging content and a highly competitive applicant pool means your child will need to score well above average to gain a place. The pass mark is not published, but you should expect the bar to be set high.

3

There are several areas where preparation needs to go beyond typical 11+ practice. Vocabulary in the Verbal Reasoning section is particularly demanding — your child will encounter less common words than in standard GL papers, so building a strong vocabulary is essential. The Maths section includes multi-step word problems and algebraic thinking that goes beyond the usual Key Stage 2 curriculum. English comprehension passages are more literary and complex, with inference questions that require careful reading. Throughout the exam, time pressure is significant, so your child will need plenty of timed practice to build speed and confidence.

4

We recommend using GL Assessment's official familiarisation materials as your starting point, then working with a tutor familiar with Sutton Consortium papers to bridge the gap between standard practice and the actual difficulty level your child will face.
